JASSO Short-term Research Program for Sustainable Development of North African and Mediterranean Regions (Year 2014-2015)

Supported by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) as a short-term scholarship program

Objective:

Currently, many problems are expecting urgent solution for sustainable development of North African and Mediterranean regions. Life and environmental issues include; decrease of agricultural productivity caused by drought and salinity, management of safe water resource, sustainable utilization of bio-resource in harmony with conservation of biodiversity while cultural and social issues; establishment of new, people-oriented societies, acquisition of competitiveness under the circumstance of globalization, re-establishment of cooperation with European countries, synchronization between Islamic tradition and recent sense of value. In order to tackle above concern, it is indispensable to grow up human resources who have high specialty and research skills. JASSO program aims to provide graduate students in Algeria, Egypt, France, Jordan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia with training opportunity to obtain research techniques and knowledge in Japan. Graduate students in European countries who study on related subjects are also welcome.

Description of the program:

Training will be carried out in Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering and others (in cooperation with Alliance for Research on North Africa), University of Tsukuba. Period will be 12 months (from 1 October 2014 to 30 September 2015). Before coming to Japan, trainees will be required to have preparatory study under the guidance of Japanese host professors.

Note: program students will be required to submit final reports one year after their completion of training in Japan.

Program students will receive following amount of scholarship from JASSO:

Nine (9) students from Zone A and One (1) student from Zone B (see below) will be accepted from universities that have concluded Agreement for Academic Exchange and Cooperation with University of Tsukuba. Program is intended for graduate students (master or doctor course). Their position at University of Tsukuba will be Exchange research students (or Tokubetsu Kenkyugakusei).

Procedure of Application:

  1. First, Applicant should define his/her host professor in University of Tsukuba and research plan. If you have already any contact with a professor in our university, please consult her/him about your research plan. If not, please consult the Exchange Coordinator of your home university and/or that of our university. You may also find information of specialties of our professors on the web pages below:
  2. Second, Applicant should prepare documents instructed on the pages below:

After preparation of the documents required, please send their electronic files to your host professor, the Exchange Coordinator and the Program Coordinator (Dr. Takahiro MORIO) for confirmation. After they are revised (if necessary) and confirmed, please send the original documents to your host professor by mail (please ask the postal address to your host professor) as well as the electronic files of the finalized documents to the host professor, Exchange Coordinator and Program Coordinator. The host professor will submit them to International Student Center through Academic Service Office (Shien-Sitsu) to which the host professor belongs. Please note that all the procedure should be completed by the end of June 2014 (3 months before commencement of study in University of Tsukuba).
  4. After evaluation the application documents (especially transcript of academic records and research plan), scholarship students will be decided. The result will be informed to the applicants by one month before the commencement of the program.
